Celebrate The Spectrum

What is Celebrate The Spectrum?

Celebrate the Spectrum is an opportunity for positive action to provide spaces of support and advocacy for our diverse communities — while learning about autism and how we can all make our communities better and more inclusive places for autistic people

How do I participate in this year’s World Autism Day events?

There are so many fun ways to Celebrate The Spectrum with us on World Autism Day across Ontario. Find out how to get involved leading up to April 2, 2024, and throughout the month of April. Autism Ontario is excited to have you participate and celebrate with us. Thank you for being part of this momentous day with us!

Summer Camp – Camp Shomria (hashomerhatzair.ca)

Camp Summary

Our chanichimot (campers) can’t wait to get back to camp. The chance to live with their best friends, to pursue their passions and learn out from behind a desk, to be treated like an adult, and – who are we kidding – the chance to get some time away from the folks. Camp is special. If you went to camp as a kid, you remember.

And our camp is special. It’s small enough that everyone knows everyone, and since people come back year after year, it’s more than a camp, it’s a village; a village made up of people from around the world, people who all experience Shomria as more than a retreat, but as a home away from home.

All our campers are organized by kvutza (group). Each kvutza is grouped by age and has a set of madrichimot (counsellors), most of whom are former campers themselves, each with their unique approach. The three younger kvutzot and the three older kvutzot are each called a machane (camp), and all of it together is called mosh.

One of the most special aspects of camp is living communally in tzrifim (cabins). We are proud to offer multiple housing options (girls, boys, and all gender cabins) to meet the diverse needs of our camp community.

Camp Summary

Our summer camp provides a safe and fun experience for children, youth, and adults with intellectual disabilities.

Individuals with autism and other spectrum disorders, Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, acquired brain injuries, and other intellectual disabilities have celebrated Belwood as a place they can call home away from home. Our program gives our participants a chance to make positive, life-long friendships and build on their social skills. We also offer an opportunity to try new activities in a safe, adaptable environment. Our entire program is wheelchair accessible, an initiative we have been building for over a decade to become stronger and more useful to our participants. Our participants engage in several activities in the morning, as well as choice activities and clubs in the afternoon, bringing us all together for an all camp event in the evening like concerts, campfires, and modified tag games. We offer land sports (baseball, basketball, soccer, tennis/volleyball courts), a full accessible pool, as well as theatre, dance, arts & crafts, nature and special skills building.
